December Tuneup
Loren Slocum

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our holiday newsletter!  We have many exciting things in store this month, including an incredible Feng Shui Tuneup event for all our members – designed and taught by the fabulous Jayme Barrett!

For many, this year has been a rough one, with a down economy and job market.  Many of us have had to rely on our own inner strength and the strength and support of dear friends and family to make it through.  Though this year may have been a challenging one for a lot of us, many of us were surprised to see just how incredibly strong we really are.  If you were lucky, you even got to share that strength with someone who needed some extra support!

This incredible strength should carry us through the holiday season and lift us into a bright new year, filled with possibility and opportunity!

Make sure to make the most of the holiday season – spending time with treasured friends and family, reconnecting with those with whom you may have lost touch.  I know more than anything, my family and friends give me the strength I need to weather any challenge or difficulty and I cannot wait to spend time with them this season, and build up my energy, enthusiasm, and list of goals for 2010!

In addition, during the holiday season it is important to remember that there are those less fortunate then ourselves.  No matter the current job market or economic climate, we are all so blessed to have our health.  This month I have chosen to focus on the Northern California Burn Foundation, and the incredible work they do in supporting burn victims and helping them heal, both inside and out.  Make sure to read through to the end of the newsletter so you can learn about this amazing organization.  Visit their website: http://www.norcalbf.com to learn how you can help support them this year.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday season!

Stay true,
Loren

The Best Gifts Come From the Heart

This month I wanted to share something different than my usual Fashion/Beauty Tuneup.

I recently came across a great article about how the best gifts really do come straight from the heart (or basement)!
I thought this a fitting message for the holiday season.

In the past, I have made an elaborate ritual of the Christmas stockings members of my family give one another at Christmas. Each stocking was a bounty of delights, all of them admired,
but soon forgotten and put away in a drawer.  However, with this past economic year it doesn't feel right to over indulge when we all have so much already.

An article I read recently encouraged readers encouraged readers to get sentimental and creative when it came to this year’s gifts and stocking stuffers.  Unearth the hidden treasures in your basement, attic, and home office. Old photos, sentimental tokens from past trips, what about a lost appliance manual (a definite treasure in my house when something stops working!), unopened lotions given by a guest? The list goes on…

This article reminded me to give thanks during an otherwise thankless recession and expand my perception of what could fill a stocking, while getting joy from digging up finds around the house. We can be more resourceful then we think and find out we are happy with less!

May you get everything you want this holiday and feel blessed with all you have.

The Gift Of Giving

This past Thanksgiving, my kids and I participated in a charity Basket Brigade in Las Vegas.  The Basket Brigade delivers holiday meals to families who are less fortunate and have a huge challenge affording the cost of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We had tons of fun and it felt so amazing to help put a smile on the faces of the people who we were able to serve.

This convinced me even more that a fantastic Parenting Tuneup would to be to participate in a monthly contribution/charity project with our kids. It gives them the opportunity to experience contribution and feel the true beauty in life.  It instills the secret to a life of total fulfillment which we all wish for our children. You and your kids can choose any program that feels right for your family such as adopting an animal from a shelter, visiting a nursing home, etc.  The key is to participate with your kids on a regular basis and then they too will most likely grow into adulthood with a huge sense of the power of contribution which will help them in flourish. The gift you will be offering your children is the gift of giving. Enjoy!

The Present

In this month of giving I wanted to remind you of a totally free present that you can give to your family, friends and your significant other.  The gift of being present.  The majority of women that I know have a totally full plate eleven months of the year and when the holidays come around their plate starts to overflow.  I don't know about you but this time of year I tend to go into "overload" mode.  I am constantly reviewing and rewriting my to do list, adding more and more to it  and forgetting to enjoy what is really important, and that is the people in my life.   I get caught up in the expectation of the holiday instead of the spirit of the holiday.

This year do yourself and everyone around you a favor and stop several times a day and take 5 deep cleansing breaths.   In this renewed state of mind really look at your ever growing list and ask yourself how you can simplify.  What can you leave off the list this year that maybe you don't really enjoy or doesn't bring you joy?  I know in our extended family we all decided to give to a charity of our choice instead of exchanging gifts which freed up a lot of crazed shopping time!!  I also decided to simplify my decorations for the holiday and then cut back on baking sugary treats that we don't need to be eating anyway.

Finally, with a new attitude of simplicity take time to be present in everything you do this holiday season.  Take time to listen to your kids, spend special time with friends and special, uninterrupted time with your significant other.   I know that at my house when Momma ain't stressed - everything goes better.

Many blessings for a stress free, holiday season!

Christmas time can be hectic, as we all want to have a good time and everlasting memories.  What is most important? Is it all about what you want? Is it all about what your kids want? My focus during this holiday season is to enjoy how blessed I am just to see my family members’ smiles, hear my kids laugh and giggle and see the holiday magic unfold right before our eyes.

Articulating Your Needs - The Invisible Playbook

Things are going great with a friend, lover, family member or stranger.  You are feeling that connection.  The conversation is deep and powerful then all of a sudden the referee calls "outta bounds".  You just stepped on a landmine!  Boom!  What was that you ask?  You have just entered the hurt zone!

That was a violation of the invisible playbook!   That sacred book that each of us has within us.  The book that defines for each of us what is enjoyable and what is not.  The rules to what is naughty versus what is nice.  We all have this book, but most of us don't notice it until we violate a rule or touch a sore spot.

My first high school boyfriend was amazing.  The notion of love was intoxicating.  He was there trying to please me in every way possible.  In immature love, I believed that love was so strong therefore he should automatically know my invisible playbook.  He should have psychic abilities.  I don't think so!  Poor high school boyfriend didn't stand a chance.

So why I am I writing this article?  I'm writing this article because so often we fail to articulate our needs as unique humans.  We want to support and love one another, but the notion of love and support looks so differently for each of us.  What does love and support look like to you? Where are your emotional landmines?  Sometimes, we want to pretend that we are Mother Teresa and don't have any needs, however, even Mother Teresa had needs.

When we have a day at the spa and go in for a massage, a good massage therapist probes to determine what we like.  Do we have previous injuries and places to avoid?  Do we have areas that need extra attention? Our responses become the therapist's roadmap to giving us an enjoyable experience. The roadmap becomes the invisible playbook.

So, free yourself, allow those needs to be spoken and ask those you care about to share their invisible playbook.  Be open and fully present as you listen to their needs.  This sacred playbook is a window into a person's soul. Articulating your needs will not only enhance your communication, it will take your relationship to a deeper more meaningful place of fulfillment.

How to Give a Good Compliment

A good compliment lifts a person’s spirits. Giving a compliment comes easily and naturally for some people and it feels difficult and awkward for others. It is simply a skill that takes practice to develop.
Here are some tips:

1.  Pay Attention. The first step is to take notice of other people. Notice how they look and how they make you feel. Pay attention to what they say.

2.  Be Specific. People like to be known and seen. A powerful compliment is specific, not general. Consider the impact. “You’re awesome” doesn’t compare to “You are so organized and I know I can always count on you.”

3.  Be Genuine. A compliment should always be genuine and authentic. Look for what you honestly like about a person. Tell the truth.

4.  Be Generous. Giving a compliment is inherently a generous practice. Don’t use this as an opportunity to compare behavior that you like to behavior that you don’t. Keep your compliments clean and avoid offering them with corrections and comparisons. “I like your hair this color so much better than red” is actually an insult, not a compliment.

5.  Acknowledge. The most powerful compliments acknowledge who a person is and who they are becoming. Use this language, “You are…”

6.  Champion. Be a cheerleader. Let people know that you believe in them. Use this language, “I support/ I care/ I understand/ I know …”

7.  Be Concise. A compliment can lose its impact if it is surrounded by explanations and justifications. Keep it brief, simple and direct.

8.  Let it Land. Don’t rush to the next thing. Allow your compliment to be received. Generally people will say, “Thank you.” Sometimes a person will push a compliment away by belittling themselves or minimizing their contribution. Gently repeat the compliment.

9.  Practice. Practice giving AND receiving compliments. Give at least 5 compliments every day. When someone gives you a compliment, simply say, “Thank you.”

Lobella Supports – The Northern California Burn Foundation

The Northern California Burn Foundation is an inspiring organization that we at Lobella have chosen to support and we hope you will join us.  The NCBF was founded in 1986 by Burn Unit Doctors, Nurses, and Firefighters to help assist burn survivors during their long recovery process.

The NCBF works to provide support services as well as fire and burn prevention education. This is essential to help escape the trauma and severe pain many endure when seriously burned. The NCBF also produces fire and burn prevention materials that are distributed throughout the country.

According to the American Burn Association, each year in the Untied States, 1.1 million burn injuries require medical attention.  The NCBF provides a retreat, Camp Eagle Flight for severely burned children as well as other programs for burn survivors throughout the year. These programs are designed to:

  • Build self-esteem.
  • Help relieve emotional suffering.
  • Build coping skills.
  • Promote socializing with other burn survivors.

A Letter from the Director, Brenda Ballentine:

My name is Brenda Ballantine, MA M.F.T. I began volunteering for the Northern California Burn Foundation in 1993 because I wanted to help children I saw at Camp Eagle Flight who were severely burned. These children, ages five through eighteen, were missing arms, legs, had severe facial disfigurement, scars hidden beneath their clothing, as well as scars within their hearts.

I also had experienced the horror only a mother feels when my own daughter was burned by an accidental spill of boiling water. Because I was not home at the time of the accident, I felt the pain and guilt of a mother’s heart. (If only I would have been there that would never had happened!)  I watched my child suffering, and went through all the steps of learning how to change bandages, etc. after leaving the hospital. I understand what parents go through when their children suffer a tragedy. Years later, my youngest daughter also suffered third degree burns on her leg and foot from a motor accident

Unfortunately, after twenty five years of marriage I found myself going through a horrible divorce. I could not endure the abuse, or allow my children to suffer any longer. After a long period of mourning the fantasy of “Happily Ever After”, I had to come out of a deep depression and begin life all over again. Giving my time to the Burn Foundation, helping others who were hurting even more than I, was one reason to step up and start over. Brandy Rapley was one of those young children.

During that time my children had the opportunity to go to burn camp and see other children that were also burned, and by so doing their scars took on a different perspective in their own eyes.

Many do not realize that when burn survivors leave the hospital, they may have no support from others. In the United States there is not a place for burn survivors or emergency responders who have been hurt in the line of duty to go when the need arises. Yes, there are summer camps provided once a year in many states, yet burn survivors are burned all year round. It is my plan to provide a resort that is designed specifically for America’s Most Innocent, and America’s Most Brave. Once it is built, it can be a template for others.

I am a public speaker, a Host for a television show titled “On Call”, and I speak on radio shows, to help get the message out. I also have worked with my new husband and the media helping create six one-hour live television shows titled “Hearts for Burned Children”. We are reaching out in any way we can to ask for help.

I had the privilege of meeting Loren while taking a small group of burn survivors to an Anthony Robbins event.  At this event the survivors were able to socialize with regular people and feel accepted and supported.  Most inspiring of all, the survivors took on and conquered, a true Anthony Robbins challenge, that of walking on fire.  Watching these survivors conquer their biggest fear, that of fire, only served to further inspire me to dedicate myself to the NCBF.  I am thankful to Loren for her support, and hope that in this season of giving, Lobella members will open their hearts to the Northern California Burn Foundation and help us build a camp that can be a retreat, and a place of respite and healing for burn survivors.

My Fight To Live - Brandy Rapely, Burn Survivor

This began at fifteen, thirteen years ago. The pain I held on, too scared to feel, at times I still struggle. I could not believe what I have seen and would not allow myself to feel any of it. Denial was a safe place to hide.

I would not believe what had happened to my life, although I had all the scars to prove it. I wouldn’t believe, not until I was invited to Anthony Robbins, “Unleashing the Power Within” event that began the end of July. I went with a group of burn survivors to San Jose where my life changed dramatically. I began to believe in myself for the first time. Right or wrong, I looked at myself, inside and out. I continue to do so because I was asked this question, “What are your beliefs”?  This question has opened me up like a book.

My name is Brandy Rapley. At fifteen I was involved in a car accident. I was a passenger with my friend and her boyfriend. We were leaving a party (parents came home unexpectedly) with intentions to hit another spot or so I thought. It was a party out in the country. Everyone loaded up in trucks and cars, on our way in a hurry.

I was not expecting or even thinking about any danger. Time flashed, a vivid picture is forever imprinted in my vision. A truck with two people staring right at me slams into the care I was in. I was told we had to have rolled over five times, smashed upside down. The driver was my friend’s boyfriend. He had been drinking, along with the other driver. Everyone except me managed to escape with what seemed to be minor scratches. While I am trapped, the passenger from the other vehicle ran away. I heard he was on probation. Beer cans scattered from the roll, so the remaining people cleared up the evidence so they wouldn’t get in trouble.

Ten minutes later, others at the scene finally notice someone was trapped and about to die. Flames began to erupt and fear sank in. I was tangled, trapped, in pure black, pitch darkness. I lost consciousness. I woke surrounded by confused peers. I lay in a ditch burned on 78% of my body. I couldn’t believe what had happened, how could they leave me trapped, the horror was too great to face.

I probably could have lived my whole life, unaware or not believing my life changed. Thirteen years was long enough. I had an opportunity and took it when I went to see Tony. It was there I met Loren, and we had an opportunity to do an interview. I got another chance, a life I believe in, Mine. I am twenty eight with an unconditional loving family, and two beautiful boys who I adore. I now have a whole life ahead of me to live to the fullest.

Truly,
Brandy Rapley
